this apparatus is designed to demonstrate thermal expansion and contraction of metals and the forces involved in these processes. The apparatus features a long steel rod that is mounted in a heavy iron frame. One end of the rod is drilled to hold a thin brittle iron rod. The other end is threaded and provided with a knurled tensioning knob. When heated with the use of a Bunsen burner, the steel rod will expand and it's tension will decrease. Initial tension is restored by using the knurled knob. As the rod cools, the tension increased until the force on the smaller iron rod causes it to fracture, demonstrating the forces involved in thermal contraction.

Heating source and Bunsen burner not included.

Bar measures 13" long. The base of the apparatus measures 12.75" long and 3.25" wide.
